Cynthia Jackson, licensed
esthetician, can help you keep your skin young and healthy
looking. Here's how the basic steps of regular facials can
help you keep your glow.
Cleaning
The increased level of pollutants we are exposed to leave
dirt, grime and even chemicals on our skin. This step in a
facial helps clean out clogged pores so the skin can breath
— preventing blackheads and breakouts. In addition, the
cleaning phase of the facial helps address the free radical
damage done from sun exposure. New
professional, sonic-powered, hand-held cleansing machines,
combined with recent skincare product breakthroughs, allow
for deeper penetration into the skin.
Analyzing
The latest technology in skin
analysis allows an esthetician to
more accurately analyze a client's skin and prescribe
appropriate products. Clear LED light illumination systems
that are built into magnifying lenses can help a client
pinpoint where problem areas are occurring and take
preventative or corrective actions — sooner rather than
later. If a client knows they have a clump of skin damage on
their forehead, they can work with their festhetician
to more aggressively treat the situation.
Exfoliating
While traditional facials have always involved removing
dead skin as part of aiding cellular renewal, in the past
few years, peels and microdermabrasion have taken this
process even further. The result
of this type of exfoliating is the stimulation of collagen
and elastin production.
When the skin is well
exfoliated, the top layer of dead skin comes off and the
face glows. This step of a facial helps boost the immune
system of the skin and improves circulation which helps
refine pores and lessen wrinkles.
Feeding
The ingredients contained in today's professional skin
care products are designed for deeper penetration into the
skin. In addition, when microcurrent technology (which is
noninvasive) is used, it helps the products to penetrate
even more deeply. Increased
hydration helps stimulate the energy centers of the cells to
work more efficiently. This, in turn, helps diminish the
appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, gives skin a smother
and firmer texture and improves facial contour.
Calming
The last phase of a facial is designed to calm the skin
and bring it back into balance. The biggest breakthrough is
the use of LED light, which helps take down inflammation and
targets conditions such as premature aging, rosacea and
hyper-pigmentation.
By getting regular facials at
every phase of the process, you are taking small steps to
buck the effects of aging on your skin — making it less
likely that you will have to spend the big bucks on bigger,
more expensive techniques down the road. |

Tips for healthy
summer skin:
|
|
Exfoliate
Your Skin |
| |
|
 |
Do make sure to hydrate, but know that
slathering on the moisturizer isn't going to cure
dull, dry skin unless you exfoliate first. |
| |
|
 |
Use a sugar or salt scrub in the shower to
gently slough away dead skin cells. Work the scrub
in a circular motion, starting at your feet and
heading up through your shoulders. |
| |
|
 |
Don't rub too hard; you'll irritate your skin.
Be extra gentle on your face and use a facial scrub
on your face and neck. Exfoliate twice a week all
summer long to keep your skin glowing. |
| |
|
|
|
Wear Sunscreen |
| |
|
 |
Whenever you go out, use a sunscreen on your
body and face. Reapply often, especially if you go
in the water. |
| |
|
 |
Don't bake in the sun at the beach or by the
pool and don't even think about hitting the tanning
bed. The tan you get isn't worth the damage to your
skin or risk of skin cancer. |
| |
|
 |
Use a sunless self-tanner to build up a summer
glow gradually. If you aren't a fan of self-tanners,
use a bronzer on your face. |
| |
|
| |
Hydrate
Your Skin |
| |
|
 |
Use a facial moisturizer morning and night and a
body lotion daily to keep your skin hydrated. Apply
lotion right after you shower to help seal the
moisture into your skin. |
| |
|
 |
Don't forget about your lips. Use a lip balm or
moisturizing lipstick to keep your lips soft and
moisturized. Better yet, use a lip balm with SPF 15
or greater to protect from sunburn. |
| |
|
| |
Eat healthy |
| |
|
 |
Eat a diet rich in vitamins, antioxidants and
omega-3 fatty acids for healthy, supple skin.
Cold-water fish and flaxseeds are
packed with omega-3s and eating berries, dark, leafy
greens and brightly colored veggies will give your
skin an antioxidant boost. |
| |
|
 |
Don't skip your workouts. Get some aerobic
exercise at least three times a week. It's good not
only for your body, but also for your circulation,
which is great for your skin and will give you a
healthy glow. |
| |
|
 |
Be sure to drink eight glasses of water daily to
flush the toxins from your body for clear,
healthy-looking skin. |
| |
|
| |
Wear Hats
& Sunglasses |
| |
|
 |
Protect your face from the sun with a
wide-brimmed hat. Of course, you shouldn't skip the
sunscreen, but a hat will protect your hair and add
another layer of protection for your face. |
| |
|
 |
Wear sunglasses. They look glamorous and they
protect your eyes. Be sure to get shades with %100
UVA/UVB protection. |
